Voivod
Brand: Voivod
Details: Amazon.ca With this, their 13th full-length album, Voivod have welcomed back their original vocalist, Denis Belanger, brought on board a new member--none other than Metallica's Jason Newsted--and are clearly enjoying a fresh lease of life. Indeed, so youthful do they sound that for the first few tracks they recall the rough and punky days of the new wave of British heavy metal. By the time they reach "Rebel Robot", though, they rediscover their old form, switching time and rhythm to maximum effect. "The Multiverse", with its echoing, head-spinning intro, evolves into a complex monster as Belanger howls out his confusion at the incomprehensible enormity of everything. He rises to the occasion yet again during the discordant but melodic "Divine Sun" and particularly the churning, shape-shifting "Invisible Planet". Occasionally Voivod drift into "normal" heavy rock, and one wishes they'd included some sonic experimentation along the lines of the grim and freaky extra track (after the apparent closer "We Carry On"). Nevertheless, their new-found exuberance is a joy to witness and it is to be hoped that the presence of Newsted will earn them a large and long-overdue audience. --Dominic Wills
