The Quebec-born, Ottawa-based singer-songwriter relocated to Los Angeles to work with Joni Mitchell's ex, Larry Klein, on 1999's Night in a Strange Town but returned north for her fifth CD. 2001's Unravel features Starling's Ian Lefeuvre behind the production desk, and in addition to the handful of instruments he adds to the mix--piano, mellotron, mandolin, wobbly guitar--Lefeuvre also brings a more gradual and relaxed flow to Miles's music. With a voice that has hints of country, occasionally dipping into torchy crooning, the obvious comparison is the atmospheric twang of the Cowboy Junkies, particularly on tracks like "Black Flowers" and "I'm the Moon."
