Even with a composer as fluent in melody as Tchaikovsky, its amazing just how many of them are packed into Act Two. The "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", for instance, and the "Waltz of the Flowers"; while older listeners in the UK will instantly connect the "Dance of the Reeds" with a commercial for a certain chocolate bar. The "Final Waltz and Apotheosis" prove once again that no one matches Tchaikovsky when it comes to style and spectacle in dance. Mackerras gets fizzing playing from the LSO, and conveys the charm of this music without any sentimentality.
