So What's New

So What's New

Author: BRUBECK,DAVE

Format: Remixes included

Release Date: 26-05-1998

Details: All-new tunes from the 77-year-old pianist, on the eve of his extensive UK tour. Brubeck never stops gigging, turning out intimate string quartets or grandiose compositions for classical orchestras but he's now reining back in to the format that made him famous. Bassist Jack Six and drummer Randy Jones are still on board, but alto saxophonist Bobby Militello is a more recent addition, helping to realise the varied stances of these tricky compositions. The leader's skewed, angular key phrases are clearly visible at some distance, his tunes compacted so that no solo overstays its welcome, divided equally between purposeful trotters and diaphanous ballads, even nodding to Bach during his Chorale. Brotherly Love adopts a traipsing halt-time, Militello's solo licking at Texas blues rhinestones, before his breath goes faint during the closing Five For Ten Small Fingers. -- Martin Longley © 1998 Emap Consumer Magazines Limited.
