Remixed
Author: Mari Boine
Release Date: 02-11-2001
Details: Amazon.ca The whole of this Sami singer's 1990s output was made available for Remixed and features the likes of Jah Wobble, Bill Laswell and Biosphere all on one album. The Sami people live in the northernmost reaches of Scandinavia and Boine is their artistic ambassador resolutely singing in her native tongue. Bugge Wesseltoft's Jazzland label is central to the current electro-jazz innovations in Norway. This latest remix project updates Boine's sound for the modern chill-floor. Without defusing the guttural intensity of her vocal, Mari stands proud above a variety of tweaked atmospherics and pneumatic pulses with boosted lines, beats and basslines. Biosphere draw out a bass throb slurring the soundscape of "Alddagasat Ipmilat", which invokes a deeply mysterious aura. Mark De Clive-Lowe completely updates "Ale Ale Don", which sounds like he's re-recorded much of the instrumentation and builds up repeated mini-climaxes of heightened interaction. The intensity of the original drumming sits comfortably beside house bumps and breakbeat skitters. --Martin Longley
