RCA Victor Classics: Bossa Antigua (1965)

Author: Jim Hall - guitar

PartNumber: 090266868926

Details: Amazon.ca When playing alongside Dave Brubeck, the sublime altoist Paul Desmond often played "good cop" (gentle, insouciant, cheerful) to Brubeck's "bad cop" (agitated, cerebral, weighty). In his own, equally fascinating quartets with the august and always composed guitarist Jim Hall, the discord of the Brubeck band is replaced by concord and sympathy. Although the seeds of bossa nova were laid in the mid-1950s, it took two early-1960s Stan Getz records for it to truly blossom: 1962's Jazz Samba with Charlie Byrd and 1964's Getz/Gilberto with Joao Gilberto. Thus, it makes sense that Desmond and crew entered the studio in the summer of 1964 to make their own contributions to the style. Needless to say, the unflappable ensemble and the easygoing style were a perfect match. Atop Modern Jazz Quartet drummer Connie Kay's softly swaying Brazilian rhythms, Desmond and Hall deliver passages that are assertive yet delicate, thoughtful yet breezy, and never ever hurried or forced. --Marc Greilsamer Product description Bossa Antigua is an album recorded by American jazz saxophonist Paul Desmond featuring performances recorded in 1964 which were released on the RCA Victor label. The album title is a kind of pun: Bossa Antigua ("old thing") in contrast to the popular musical genre Bossa Nova ("the new thing"). Paul Desmond (born Paul Emil Breitenfeld, November 25, 1924 – May 30, 1977) was an American jazz alto saxophonist and composer, best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for composing that group's biggest hit "Take Five". He was one of the most popular musicians to come out of the cool jazz scene. In addition to his work with Brubeck, he led several groups and collaborated with Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Jim Hall, and Ed Bickert. After years of chain smoking and poor health, Desmond succumbed to lung cancer in 1977 following one last tour with Brubeck.
