Release Date: 19-10-1999
Details: Amazon.ca Guitarist Abercrombie is such an excellent institution that one almost wishes he would make a really bad recording just to prove he could do so. Well, so much for that--as usual, this is another good one. Abercrombie's versatility in so many contexts, from free to formal and from mellow to muscular, has been remarked upon many times. What's more interesting is the internal versatility which results when he feeds this talent back into his music in all of these contexts, allowing him to drop a quizzical free-form phrase into a ballad, or a leisurely pastoral riff into an uptempo, lopsided shuffle, without ever giving the impression that whatever he just did wasn't a terribly good idea. He does all of this kind of thing and more here, with some stunning support from his fellow musicians who include Joe Lovano on tenor, in fine swooping form, the riveting trumpet of Kenny Wheeler and Dan Wall's keening organ adding a nice sharpener. Fresh, sprightly and highly recommendable. --Roger Thomas Product Description Featuring a stellar cast of musicians (including trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, tenor sax man Joe Lovano and drummer Adam Nussbaum among others), John Abercrombie's new recording is one of the major events of the season, and, unquestionably, one of the guitarist's finest albums. As the title suggests, this is very "open" music; jazz provides the foreground, but there are also influences drawn from blues, country and folk music.
