No Longer My Comcern
Author: Michael J. Sheehy
Release Date: 22-10-2002
Details: Amazon.ca No Longer My Concern, Michael J Sheehy's third solo album in as many years, finds him settling into his style with growing confidence and aplomb. If Sheehy has not yet quite transcended his influences, not yet quite created something that is unmistakably his, it is only because he has chosen to work in some mighty long shadows Sheehy still sounds somewhat dwarfed by his own private, internal Rushmore of Scott Walker, Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. However, it is to Sheehy's credit that his songs are able to summon those names to mind. Most self-consciously consumptive singer-songwriters--for that is what Sheehy is--only succeed in persuading the listener of the merits of conscription. Sheehy has a fine voice, a knack for sparse, haunting arrangement, and an acute understanding of male self-delusion ("Modest Beauty", especially, would not have sounded out of place on, say, Chris Isaak's epically mournful Forever Blue). He is also capable of being very funny, as evinced by "The Ballad of The Pissed Apostle", an exuberant, Dylanesque knockabout which also appears, in alternate form, as an unlisted bonus track. --Andrew Mueller
