Details: Amazon.ca Even the most open-minded Joni Mitchell fans had to be taken aback by 1979's Mingus. An avowed jazz addict, Mitchell boldly stepped beyond her folkie roots to collaborate with notoriously free-thinking bassist and composer Charles Mingus. The brilliant, cantankerous jazzman rarely worked with anyone, particularly pop musicians, and the result was a record unlike anything either had ever done. Backed by an ensemble of jazz giants including Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter, Mitchell adds words to classic Mingus cuts like "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" and also co-composes new material. The playing is loose and wide open, often more jazz than folk, and despite the prickly terrain, Mitchell genuinely tries to find common ground between her pastoral playing and Mingus's sweeping arrangements. It's a challenging listen, especially when Mitchell starts howling on "The Wolf That Lives in Lindsey," but well worth it. --Matt Galloway Product Description Joni Mitchell
