God Help The Girl

God Help The Girl

Author: Murdoch, Stuart

PartNumber: 0744861086628

Release Date: 23-06-2009

Details: God Help the Girl is both incredibly simple and deceptively complex in its make up: on the one hand the album is, basically, Belle And Sebastian with added female vocalists; on the other it is "a story set to music", featuring nine different singers recruited via social networking site iMeem by B&S singer Stuart Murdoch. But the end results are surprisingly timeless, bringing to mind '20s musicals, '50s Jazz, '60s girl groups and shambling '80s Indie. Perhaps the best point of comparison, though, is Belle And Sebastian's own Dear Catastrophe Waitress, a 2003 album bolstered by Trevor Horn production that upped the band's Pop potential with the addition of brass, strings and other orchestral flourishes. It was not popular with all of the band's audience, many of whom were put off by its overt slickness. But it opened the band to new audiences of Top 10 hits and Radio Two airplay and the same is likely to be true of God Help the Girl, which occasionally verges towards Duffy territory.
