David Holmes Presents The Free Association
Author: Free Association
Format: Import
Release Date: 15-09-2003
Details: Amazon.ca When not composing for movies or DJing in sweaty clubs, David Holmes makes fuzzy, lo-fi soundscapes, which, although they have won him many admirers, are not quite the genre-defying works we know he's capable of producing. This is where The Free Association comes in. While technically not a Holmes solo album--the Free Association is his new band--it sounds and feels like a logical extension of his work since 2000's Bow Down to the Exit Sign; the great album he's always promised. Aided and abetted by the paranoid ramblings of vocalists Sean Revron (a kind of hip hop Captain Beefheart) and Petra Jean Philipson (Billie Holliday on steroids), Holmes lays down his most musically adventurous tracks yet, mixing up freestyle orchestral manoeuvres with dirty spy-funk horns, punchy beats and twangy jazz bass. It's country blues meets funk meets freestyle jazz meets Salvador Dali--and it's brilliant. Some may find parts of the album a touch uncomfortable at first--it can hardly be described as pop, despite Holmes claims to the contrary--but persevere; within The Free Association's 42 minutes lies some of the most rewarding, captivating and exciting music of 2002. --Matt Anniss Product description Impressive 2002 collaborative hip hop project from the producer extraordinaire!
