Details: Amazon.ca In 1965, the year of the concert which was recorded for Jazz in Paris - The Best Live Concert Vol 1, Louis Armstrong was still riding high on the success of his hit "Hello, Dolly" a year or so earlier. Although his trumpet-playing was soon to lose its confidence and power, he was in fine form on this occasion. So too was pianist Billy Kyle, given features at two contrasting tempos. "Hello, Dolly" reappears inevitably and so does "Blueberry Hill", a tune which could have been written with Armstrong in mind. These concert recordings offer interesting differences from the studio-recorded versions, and clarinettist Eddie Shu, whose Goodman-influenced clarinet here adds an unusual flavour to Armstrong's band, made no studio recordings with the trumpeter. Nor did singer Jewel Brown, whose swinging, soulful style adds a contemporary feeling to the proceedings. Tyree Glenn's trombone provides sensitive solos and obbligatos, and overall the tumultuous enthusiasm of the Paris audience was clearly justified. --Graham Colombé
