Stan Getz / Jazz 'Round Midnight - CD (Used)

Stan Getz / Jazz 'Round Midnight - CD (Used)

Author: Stan Getz

Format: CD

PartNumber: 042284144520

Release Date: 30-04-1993

Details: Amazon.ca In his time Stan Getz explored just about every manifestation of the Bossa Nova ("'Desafinado' put my kids through college", he said). The secret of his success with the genre was his ability to punch jazz blues solos into the strong melodies. There are many splendid examples of it here, where he works with some of the original artists--Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa and Astrud Gilberto--as well as with more established American jazz musicians. Despite the gentle beauty of his work, Getz was a hard man who often had Astrud Gilberto in tears when they toured together. You wouldn't know it from the sympathetic way they work together on "It Might As Well Be Spring" (guitarist Kenny Burrell and vibist Gary Burton here). Some of the tracks have Gilberto on her own without Getz and two of these have delicate backing from the full Gil Evans orchestra. There's an oddity in a solo track by Joao Gilberto, but the heavyweight and wailing "Bronx Blues" by Getz and Oscar Peterson counters this effectively. Another non-Latin track is an improvisation on "Thanks For The Memory" from the productive partnership Getz had with guitarist Jimmy Raney. --Steve Voce
